Developmental Student - Indigenous Engagement (SON)

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

 

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.

 

Development Student - Indigenous Engagement - Saugeen Ojibway Nation, Ontario

 Employment Period: Summer Term: 4 months (May 2024 – August 2024)

 

Position Location: Remotely from the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, Ontario (SON)

 

 

Job Summary: Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Engagement, Site Engagement Associate and Sr. Engagement Advisor, the Developmental Engagement Student will be responsible for organizing, supporting, and implementing initiatives geared specifically for Indigenous engagement.  The student will assist in engagement as well as plan, prepare and participate in community events.  

 

Program Eligibility:

  • Students must be returning full-time to their program at their university following the completion of their work term or be full-time students requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate.

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Co-develop, promote, and implement opportunities and activities for youth engagement.
  • Assist with preparing for and participating in community events, by working at booths and note taking.
  • Provide support for the NWMO Sponsorship and Donations program, such as completing evaluation forms, contacting applicants to arrange photo opts, and preparing media articles.
  • Create content for media channels – newspaper, radio, social media, and website.
  • Provide recommendations on youth related content for NWMO resources, such as newsletters, posters, and website.
  • Research and recommend age-appropriate reading/web-based material about science and technology geared toward youth in the community.
  • Research the Ontario curriculum and identify key learning outcomes and objectives that are relevant and related to the NWMO project.
  • Participate in and/or volunteer in local social activities being held in the community.
  • Co-develop stakeholder mapping locally and in the region.
  • Attend regular Community Liaison Committee meetings and provide support as needed.
  • Work with team leads in youth engagement to create youth learning program and materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary student enrolled in Indigenous studies, social sciences, communications, education, community planning, geology, environmental studies or other relevant programs.
  • Must have strong, existing personal or professional networks within the Saugeen Ojibway Nation territory and understanding of local opportunities and challenges related to community development.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous affairs, governance structures, community development and public engagement.
  • Demonstrated oral communication skills including presentation skills.
  • Highly organized and a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as work within a team.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Outstanding attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing skills including producing reports.
  • Good research skills.
  • Excellent computer skills - Microsoft Office, Excel, email, Internet, and social media.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work, as required.

Other Information

Work Hours:  

Students must be available to work full-time, 35 hours per week during core business hours 8:30 am – 5 pm.
